Barking seal cough: what to know

People use “seal cough” to describe a hollow, brassy bark that seems to come from the throat rather than deep in the chest. Swelling or irritation near the voice box can change the cough and voice. A viral cold is one possible setting, but allergies, reflux and other airway conditions can sound similar. Bronchiolitis is more often associated with fast breathing, wheeze or feeding difficulty in young children. The sound alone cannot tell which condition is responsible.

Hold or sit the person upright, use a reassuring voice and encourage gentle breaths. Give small drinks if they can swallow comfortably. Keep away from cigarette smoke, incense, cleaning sprays and cold rushing air if those provoke coughing. Follow a personalised inhaler or allergy plan when one has been prescribed. Do not force food, inspect a distressed child’s throat or use hot steam. If the cough began after choking, an allergic exposure or a medicine, tell the clinician exactly what happened and when.

Call emergency services for severe or worsening breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, drooling with inability to swallow, pauses in breathing, collapse or unusual difficulty waking. A high-pitched sound on breathing in, especially when the person is resting, needs urgent assessment. Seek prompt medical advice if the seal-like cough recurs, fever is persistent, drinking falls, or the person has a lung condition such as Bronchiectasis or Asthma.
