Barking cough with allergies

Allergic Rhinitis can cause a blocked or runny nose, sneezing and mucus draining into the throat. That drainage may provoke repeated throat clearing or coughing, especially after exposure to dust, pollen, mould, pets or fragrances. A truly barking sound can also arise when the upper airway is inflamed for another reason, so an allergy label should not explain away hoarseness or noisy breathing. Allergy-linked asthma may add wheeze, chest tightness or cough after exercise or exposure.

Track the setting and timing of each episode, including indoor dust, outdoor exposure, new products and meals. Reduce known triggers where practical, wash the face after outdoor exposure and keep bedrooms free of smoke and strong scents. Saline nasal rinsing may help some people when performed with safe prepared water and clean equipment. Use an allergy or inhaler medicine only as directed by a clinician or pharmacist. A barking cough in a young child, or one that begins abruptly, deserves separate assessment rather than assumed allergy treatment.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, sudden trouble breathing, faintness, blue or grey colour, or inability to swallow. Get urgent care for noisy breathing at rest, chest pulling in, rapidly worsening cough or severe wheeze. Arrange a medical review when episodes follow a clear trigger, interrupt sleep, recur through a season or continue despite avoiding exposure. Mention any history of Asthma or severe reactions.

Ask whether the pattern fits nasal allergy, airway sensitivity, reflux or infection, and whether testing or a written inhaler plan is needed. Confirm which symptoms mean the prescribed treatment is not enough and where to seek urgent help.
