Barking cough symptoms to recognise

The cough may sound rough, hollow or like a seal bark, particularly during a forceful breath out. Hoarseness, a sore throat, runny nose or mild fever can occur when a viral illness irritates the upper airway. A high-pitched noise while breathing in is different from the cough and can signal narrowing near the voice box. Wheeze, chest tightness or repeated nighttime cough may point toward Asthma. A cough can also accompany Acute Bronchitis, Bronchiolitis or Chronic Cough for different reasons.

Record whether the cough began during a cold, after exposure to an irritant, or suddenly while eating or playing. Notice the person’s breathing rate and effort, ability to drink, alertness, voice and colour. Keep them calm and upright, offer fluids if swallowing is comfortable, and avoid smoke or aerosol sprays. Do not press the tongue down to inspect a painful throat, and do not use leftover prescription medicine. A short recording of the cough may help a clinician understand the sound.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, collapse, or inability to swallow saliva. Urgent assessment is also needed for a harsh breathing-in noise at rest, rapidly worsening symptoms, marked drowsiness or chest retractions. Contact a clinician soon if fever persists, the cough is recurring, or the person has an underlying lung condition. Sudden onset after choking needs immediate evaluation.
