Barking cough during pregnancy

Hormonal changes can make the nose and airways more sensitive, and reflux may irritate the throat, particularly after meals or when lying down. A cold, allergic rhinitis, bronchitis, or asthma can also produce a rough cough. Pregnancy does not make every cough dangerous, but reduced breathing reserve or an existing lung condition can make symptoms more significant. The bark itself cannot identify the cause.

Drink regularly, rest, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and keep the room comfortably humid without using scalding steam. Note triggers, breathing sounds, and whether the cough affects sleep or eating. Check every cough, cold, reflux, or allergy medicine with your obstetric clinician or pharmacist before taking it, including products labelled natural. Do not use leftover prescriptions or someone else's inhaler.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, confusion, coughing blood, or inability to drink. Contact your maternity or medical team promptly for wheeze, noisy breathing at rest, worsening cough, dehydration, persistent vomiting, or reduced ability to carry out normal activities. Mention any fever or known exposure to infection.

Ask which medicines are suitable for your stage of pregnancy, whether reflux or asthma may be contributing, and what symptoms should prompt urgent review. Bring your gestational stage, current medicines, medical history, and a timeline of the cough.
