Barking cough that is not croup

Coughing after a cold may linger as sensitive airways recover. Nasal drainage from allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat, and reflux can do so after meals or when lying down. Asthma may cause cough with wheeze, chest tightness, or exercise. Bronchitis can produce a rough cough as the breathing tubes become inflamed. A clinician considers age, duration, exposure, examination findings, and the presence or absence of stridor or wheeze.

Offer frequent fluids and allow quiet rest. Avoid smoke, vaping aerosols, strong scents, and dusty rooms. Keep the upper body comfortable and note whether symptoms change with position, meals, cold air, or activity. Do not assume that an antibiotic or a cough suppressant is appropriate; treatment depends on the cause. If the cough keeps returning, arrange an examination rather than repeatedly treating the sound alone.

Get urgent help if breathing is hard, the skin pulls in between the ribs, the lips look blue or grey, the person cannot speak or drink normally, or there is noisy breathing while resting. Seek prompt review after choking, with coughing blood, chest pain, dehydration, severe weakness, or a cough that is getting worse rather than settling.

Ask whether the sound is coming from the throat or chest, whether reflux, allergy, or asthma is plausible, and what change should prompt urgent care. Bring a short recording if the cough is intermittent.
