Barking cough and hoarse voice: what to know

The voice box sits in the upper airway, so swelling there can make the voice rough and the cough harsh. A common cold may cause both symptoms, and acid reflux can irritate the throat in some people. Nasal drainage or a longer-lasting cough may add throat irritation. Hoarseness can also have causes unrelated to a short infection, including thyroid problems or an issue affecting the vocal cords. Throat, lung, or thyroid cancers are less common possibilities, but persistent change, a neck lump, coughing blood, or unexplained weight loss warrants assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Rest the voice, speak gently, drink fluids, and avoid shouting, smoke, and repeated throat-clearing. Do not whisper for long periods because it can strain the voice. Treating a blocked or dripping nose may reduce irritation when that is contributing. If reflux symptoms occur, record their relationship to meals and lying down. Arrange a review if the voice change keeps returning or does not improve as the cough settles.

Get emergency help for noisy breathing at rest, severe breathlessness, blue or grey skin, drooling, inability to swallow, or rapidly increasing throat swelling. Seek prompt medical review for hoarseness that persists, a neck lump, coughing blood, or pain or difficulty when swallowing. A child with a barking cough who is struggling to breathe needs urgent care.
