Is a barking cough contagious?

Cough is a symptom, not a germ. A viral illness such as a common cold, acute bronchitis, or bronchiolitis may be contagious, especially while fever, runny nose, or other fresh symptoms are present. Asthma, acid reflux, allergic rhinitis, bronchiectasis, and chronic cough are not spread by coughing, although someone with one of these conditions can also catch an infection.

The sound of the cough cannot show whether the cause is infectious. Consider the whole pattern: recent contact with an unwell person, new fever, sore throat, runny nose, and how quickly symptoms appeared. A clinician can help if the cause is unclear.

Cover coughs with a tissue or elbow, wash hands after coughing or blowing the nose, clean frequently touched surfaces, and improve airflow indoors. Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or personal inhalers. Keep the unwell person away from vulnerable people while they have fever or feel significantly unwell, following local health advice for returning to school or work.

Give fluids and rest, and avoid smoke and strong fragrances. Use medicines only as directed. If several people become ill, mention the timing and shared exposures when seeking advice.

Get emergency help for struggling to breathe, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, pauses in breathing, inability to swallow, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Children with noisy breathing at rest or visible pulling in around the ribs need urgent assessment.

Arrange prompt advice for persistent fever, dehydration, chest pain, coughing blood, marked weakness, or a cough that keeps worsening. Seek earlier assessment for infants, older adults, and people with lung or immune conditions.

Ask whether the pattern suggests an infection, how long to limit close contact, which household precautions are useful, and which symptoms mean the person needs urgent assessment.
