Barking cough and fever: what to know

Fever shows that the body is responding to inflammation or infection; it does not by itself identify the cause. A barking cough can reflect irritation around the voice box, particularly during a viral illness such as a common cold. Acute bronchitis can cause persistent cough, while bronchiolitis is more relevant in infants and young children. Notice whether the person is alert, drinking, and breathing comfortably between coughs.

Encourage small, frequent drinks and light clothing that does not cause overheating. Rest, a comfortable room, and saline for a blocked nose can ease symptoms. Check temperature using a reliable method and follow the label or clinician’s advice for any fever medicine. Do not alternate medicines unless a clinician has explained how, and never give aspirin to a child. Keep the person away from smoke.

Get emergency help if there is severe breathing effort, noisy breathing at rest, blue or grey colouring, confusion, a seizure, or inability to wake normally. Seek same-day advice if drinking falls, urination becomes much less frequent, fever is accompanied by a child who looks very unwell, or symptoms are rapidly worsening. Arrange review when the cough or fever does not settle or repeatedly returns.

Ask what may be causing the cough, how often to check hydration and temperature, which treatment is suitable, and exactly which breathing changes require emergency care.
