Barking cough and congestion: what to know

A barking sound may occur when the voice box or nearby airway becomes swollen or irritated. A blocked nose can make mouth breathing dry the throat, while mucus dripping backwards can trigger repeated coughing. A common cold is one possible explanation; allergic rhinitis can also cause nasal blockage and throat irritation. Acid reflux may contribute when coughing is worse after meals or when lying down. The sound alone cannot identify the cause.

Offer frequent fluids and allow quiet rest. Saline nose drops or spray can loosen thick mucus, and gentle nose blowing may improve airflow. Keep the room free of smoke, perfumes, and dust. For a child, hold them upright and calm during a coughing spell; crying can make noisy breathing worse. Use medicines only as directed for the person’s age and health, and do not give antibiotics unless prescribed.

Seek urgent help for struggling to breathe, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, marked sleepiness, or inability to swallow saliva. Prompt medical assessment is also sensible when noisy breathing occurs while resting, the cough is worsening, dehydration develops, or a young child has a harsh cough with breathing difficulty. Arrange a routine review if symptoms persist, keep returning, or interfere with sleep and usual activity.
