Bark-like cough: understanding the symptom

A cough's sound cannot identify its cause by itself. A cold or another respiratory infection may inflame the throat and voice box. Post-nasal drainage, acid reflux, inhaled smoke, or an asthma flare can also irritate the airway. Listen for a high-pitched sound on breathing in, and notice hoarseness, wheezing, fever, chest discomfort, or breathlessness. Record whether the cough started abruptly, follows a meal, or becomes worse during sleep.

A child with a bark-like cough may have more noticeable upper-airway symptoms because the airway is narrow. An adult may develop the sound after infection, voice strain, or irritation. The person's breathing and overall condition guide urgency.

Encourage quiet rest and keep the person sitting upright. Give fluids in small amounts when swallowing is easy. Keep indoor air free from cigarette smoke, incense, sprays, and dust. A cool, comfortable room may reduce irritation; never place anyone over boiling water. For children, use only medicines suitable for their age and follow professional advice. Write down associated symptoms and any known trigger so a clinician can assess the pattern.

Call emergency services for struggling or rapidly worsening breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow, drooling, confusion, or a harsh breathing noise that continues while resting. Urgent assessment is also needed after choking or a possible inhaled object. Contact a clinician when the cough is recurrent, interferes with sleep, occurs with persistent fever or wheeze, or does not improve with the rest of the illness.

Ask what findings would distinguish upper-airway irritation from asthma or infection, whether a throat or chest examination is needed, and what treatment is appropriate for the person's age and other medicines.
