Baricitinib for hair loss

It is a prescription oral medicine that reduces selected immune signals involved in follicle attack.

Alopecia areata commonly presents with smooth patches of hair loss and may also affect the brows, lashes or wider scalp. Baricitinib targets the immune process behind this condition; it does not correct hereditary pattern thinning, traction damage, scarring alopecia or temporary shedding after illness.

Hair response varies, can take time and may not be complete. The dermatologist weighs the extent and impact of disease against risks from immune suppression. Continued treatment may be needed to maintain benefit, so expectations and a review plan should be agreed before starting.

Have the hair-loss pattern examined rather than treating from photographs alone. The clinician may use scalp examination, hair-pull findings or targeted tests to distinguish alopecia areata from other causes.

Before prescribing, discuss infections, tuberculosis exposure, clotting history, cardiovascular risk, cancer history, pregnancy plans, kidney or liver conditions and vaccination status. Blood tests are used before and during therapy. Take the tablet exactly as directed and report new medicines, including over-the-counter products.

Call the prescribing clinic for fever, a worsening cough, painful blistering rash, persistent abdominal pain, unexplained bruising or a new suspicious skin lesion. Early assessment matters because baricitinib can reduce the body's ability to handle infection.

Get emergency care for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, weakness on one side, speech trouble or a painful swollen leg. These symptoms can reflect a blood clot or serious heart or brain event.
