Waterproof bandage for stitches: what should you know?

A waterproof dressing creates a barrier against splashes, but no adhesive cover protects every wound during prolonged water exposure. Moisture trapped under a dressing can soften surrounding skin and allow the cover to loosen. The wound’s location, depth, drainage, and the type of sutures affect whether covering is advised. Your instructions may allow brief showering while discouraging baths, swimming, or soaking until healing progresses.

Use a clean dressing that extends beyond the wound and seals on dry skin. Apply it only as directed, keep showering brief, and avoid directing strong water pressure at the stitches. Pat around the cover rather than rubbing it. Remove and replace the dressing if it lifts, becomes wet inside, dirty, or soaked through. Wash your hands before changes, do not put creams under the cover unless prescribed, and never pull at the sutures.

Contact a clinician if the wound becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or starts producing pus or a bad smell. Seek urgent help if the wound opens, bleeding continues despite firm pressure, you develop fever, or the affected area loses normal movement or sensation. An adhesive reaction with spreading rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty also needs urgent attention.
