Balloon spirometer: purpose, use and limitations

A balloon-style device expands or moves when air passes through it. That response can make breathing effort easier to see, but it depends on the balloon, tubing, seal, posture, and force of the breath. It does not directly measure every part of lung function and cannot identify the cause of cough or breathlessness. Follow the instructions for your exact model and sit upright. Keep a firm lip seal, use the breathing pattern recommended by your clinician, and avoid repeated forceful attempts if you feel light-headed. Clean or replace parts according to the manufacturer’s guidance, and never share a mouthpiece. Keep notes about the date, technique, symptoms, and result so a clinician can interpret changes in context. Do not use a balloon result to start, stop, or increase medication.

Stop the test if you develop chest pain, severe coughing, marked dizziness, or worsening breathlessness. Seek urgent help for sudden severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or sudden chest pain. Medical review is needed for persistent symptoms even when the balloon appears to move normally.
