Bad headaches after miscarriage

Headache may follow fluid loss, reduced food intake, stress, poor sleep, migraine, blood loss, medication, or anaesthesia used during a procedure. Its severity and the symptoms occurring alongside it matter more than assuming a single cause.

Dizziness, breathlessness, racing heartbeat, unusual weakness, or marked paleness alongside ongoing bleeding can accompany significant blood loss. Fever, chills, worsening lower abdominal pain, or unpleasant-smelling vaginal discharge can occur with infection and require medical review.

If you had spinal or epidural anaesthesia for a procedure, report a headache that intensifies when upright and improves when flat. New visual disturbance, confusion, weakness, speech difficulty, or a sudden explosive onset suggests a different urgent problem.

Contact the service managing your miscarriage or an urgent care provider if the headache is severe, keeps returning, or is not easing. Describe the bleeding, pelvic pain, temperature, medicines taken, and whether management was expectant, medical, or surgical.

Rest, sip fluids, and eat something light if you are able, but do not let self-care delay assessment of warning signs. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before combining pain medicines, particularly if you have other conditions or take regular medication.

Seek emergency help for sudden unbearable headache, collapse, seizure, confusion, one-sided weakness, facial droop, trouble speaking, loss of vision, chest pain, or breathing difficulty.

Obtain urgent gynaecology or emergency assessment for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, faintness, a fast heartbeat, or feeling acutely unwell. These signs may need examination, blood tests, or imaging without delay.

Ask whether blood loss, infection, a medicine, or anaesthesia could explain the headache; whether a blood count or blood pressure check is appropriate; and what changes in bleeding should bring you back for immediate care.
