Is a bad headache a pregnancy warning sign?

Pregnancy headaches can follow dehydration, hunger, poor sleep, stress, eye strain, posture changes, or nasal congestion. Allergic Rhinitis, Common Cold, Chronic Sinusitis, and COVID-19 can cause head pain alongside respiratory symptoms. Heat Exhaustion may add weakness, dizziness, thirst, and heavy sweating.

The concern rises when pain is new, severe, persistent, or unlike your usual pattern. Pre-eclampsia can involve high blood pressure and may occur with headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, sudden swelling, pain under the ribs, nausea, or feeling very unwell. A symptom can have several explanations, so checking blood pressure and other findings matters.

Rest away from heat and bright light, drink fluids, eat a regular snack or meal, and record the headache’s timing and associated symptoms. If you have a home blood-pressure monitor, follow your maternity team’s instructions for checking it; do not let a normal reading delay care when warning symptoms are present.

Call your maternity service for advice about a persistent or severe headache. Ask before taking medicine, because pregnancy stage, allergies, other conditions, and current treatments affect what is suitable.

Seek urgent assessment for severe sudden pain, visual disturbance, facial or hand swelling, pain beneath the ribs, shortness of breath, confusion, fainting, seizure, new weakness, fever with a stiff neck, or reduced fetal movement. These symptoms need timely evaluation rather than observation at home.
