Bad hair breakage: causes, care and warning signs

It differs from shedding: a shed hair usually comes away from the root, whereas a broken strand is shorter and lacks a bulb at one end. Reducing damage and handling hair gently can limit further snapping, but an inflamed, painful or visibly thinning scalp deserves assessment.

Uneven short hairs, frayed ends, rough texture and strands that snap during combing point toward fibre damage. Curly and tightly coiled hair can be especially vulnerable where natural bends and dryness make each fibre easier to stress.

Bleaching, straightening chemicals, frequent hot tools, vigorous towel drying and tightly secured styles can weaken the shaft. Breakage near areas under steady tension may accompany traction alopecia. Scaling with circular patches of broken hair can occur when scalp ringworm presents on the scalp.

Pause bleaching, relaxers and high-heat styling while the hair feels fragile. Use conditioner, detangle from the ends upward with fingers or a wide-tooth comb, and blot rather than rub wet hair. Loosen braids, extensions, ponytails or headwear that pulls at the hairline.

A simple diary of products, styling practices and where snapping occurs can reveal a pattern. Trim badly split ends if desired; trimming improves the feel and shape but does not repair the internal structure of an already damaged strand.

Arrange a medical or dermatology assessment if breakage continues despite gentler care, forms distinct patches, or comes with scalp scale, crusting, redness, tenderness, pus or expanding hair loss. Prompt evaluation matters when a child has patchy broken hairs and scaling because a contagious scalp infection may need prescription treatment.

Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever or spreading redness. These signs reflect scalp inflammation or infection rather than ordinary cosmetic damage.

Ask whether the pattern represents shaft breakage, shedding from the root or both; whether the scalp needs examination for infection or inflammation; and which styling practices should stop temporarily. Bring the names of recent dyes, straighteners, medicines and supplements, plus photographs showing how the pattern has changed.
