Bactroban for cellulitis: what patients should know

Bactroban is a brand of mupirocin, an antibiotic ointment applied to the skin. Cellulitis involves deeper skin tissues, so an ointment may not reach the infection adequately. A clinician may prescribe it for a separate surface wound or crusted area, but it should not replace treatment directed at the cellulitis.

Cellulitis commonly presents with expanding redness, warmth, swelling, and tenderness. The affected skin may have no visible cut, because bacteria can enter through a tiny crack, athlete's foot, an ulcer, or another break in the skin. Treatment choice depends on the examination, the affected site, allergies, other medical conditions, and whether there are signs of a deeper or spreading infection.

Do not use leftover Bactroban or another person's prescription. Red, swollen skin can also have non-bacterial causes, and using the wrong medicine can delay the correct diagnosis. Mupirocin can occasionally cause local burning, itching, or irritation.

Arrange a medical assessment promptly, particularly when redness is spreading or the area is painful and warm. Until you are seen, rest the affected part and elevate a swollen arm or leg when practical. Keep any broken skin gently clean and avoid squeezing, puncturing, or vigorously massaging the area.

If Bactroban was prescribed for a specific surface lesion, apply it only as directed and complete the prescribed course. Keep track of the edge of the redness and any change in pain, swelling, drainage, or general wellbeing. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should mention this during assessment because it can affect management.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe or escalating pain, fever, chills, confusion, faintness, fast breathing, marked drowsiness, purple or blistered skin, or red streaks moving away from the area. Infection near an eye also needs urgent assessment. These features can signal a serious or quickly progressing infection rather than a problem suitable for ointment alone.

Contact the treating clinician if symptoms worsen after treatment starts, new areas appear, or you cannot take the prescribed antibiotic because of vomiting or a suspected reaction. Trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat after any medicine requires emergency help.
