What should you know about bacteria causes cholera?

Cholera bacteria affect the small intestine and can cause the body to release large amounts of water and salts into the bowel. The diarrhoea may be pale and watery, and vomiting can add to the loss. Thirst, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness, muscle cramps, and reduced urine are warning signs of dehydration. People can deteriorate quickly, so the appearance of the diarrhoea matters less than the speed and severity of fluid loss.

Start Oral Rehydration Therapy immediately if cholera is suspected and the person can drink. Give frequent sips, including after each loose stool, and seek medical care at once. A healthcare team may use IV Fluid Therapy when dehydration is severe or drinking is not possible. Antibiotics may be considered by a clinician for some cases. Use safe drinking water, wash hands carefully, and avoid preparing food for others while ill.

Treat suspected cholera as urgent, particularly when diarrhoea is frequent or vomiting prevents drinking. Go to emergency care for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, cold or clammy skin, very little urine, or difficulty staying awake. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with chronic illness should be assessed promptly because dehydration can progress rapidly.
