What should you know about bacne hyperpigmentation?

These marks are pigment changes rather than textural scars. They may fade gradually, but repeated pimples, picking, friction, and ultraviolet exposure can keep the area uneven.

Inflammation can prompt pigment-producing cells to release extra melanin, leaving a brown, grey, or purple-toned patch after a spot flattens. Deeper inflammation and repeated manipulation can make the colour more noticeable. Skin that pigments readily may darken even after a relatively small blemish.

A mark with a smooth surface is different from an indented or raised acne scar, although both can occur in the same area. Active acne may present alongside old marks, so a useful plan separates breakout control, pigment care, and treatment for any texture change.

Do not squeeze spots or scrub the back. Shower after heavy sweating, reduce friction from tight clothing, and use non-comedogenic products. Protect exposed skin from the sun; tanning can deepen marks and make surrounding skin colour less even.

A dermatologist may discuss hydroquinone or other topical pigment treatments after checking the diagnosis and your skin's tolerance. Chemical peels, IPL, picosecond lasers, and skin-brightening procedures require careful selection because energy or chemical injury can worsen pigment, particularly when acne is active. Avoid combining strong treatments without a coordinated plan.

Seek dermatology care when breakouts are painful, deep, or scarring; when dark areas continue to spread without new acne; or when a patch is itchy, scaly, raised, or changing in shape. Those features may require a different diagnosis and treatment.

Stop a new product and obtain prompt advice for marked swelling, blistering, skin breakdown, or a severe burning reaction. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face requires urgent medical help.

Ask which areas are active acne, flat pigment, and true scars; whether your acne treatment may irritate the marks; and which pigment option fits your skin tone. Before a procedure, discuss test areas, aftercare, expected colour changes, and the response plan if the skin darkens.
