Baclofen for muscle pain: what to know

Baclofen reduces signals that keep muscles tightened. It may be considered when spasm is limiting movement, but it is not suitable for every type of muscle pain, including pain from a simple Muscle Strain unless a clinician recommends it. Treating the underlying cause remains part of recovery.

Sleepiness, dizziness, weakness, nausea, or confusion can occur. Alcohol and other medicines that cause drowsiness may intensify these effects. Chronic Kidney Disease can affect how baclofen leaves the body, so the prescriber needs a complete medicine and health history.

Do not stop regular baclofen suddenly without medical advice, because withdrawal symptoms can be serious. Keep the medicine away from children and follow the dispensing instructions. Gentle movement, heat, and treatment of triggers may complement the plan when appropriate.

Seek urgent help for extreme sleepiness, confusion, trouble breathing, fainting, severe weakness, seizure, or suspected overdose. Contact the prescriber promptly for falls, persistent dizziness, new bladder problems, or worsening spasms. Ask for advice before using baclofen if you have kidney disease, are dehydrated, or take medicines that depress the nervous system.
