Back of Throat Itchy Cough: What You Should Know

Allergic rhinitis may cause an itchy throat, post-nasal drainage, sneezing, and a dry cough. A common cold can irritate the throat while congestion and mucus keep the cough going. Acid reflux may cause throat clearing, a sour taste, hoarseness, or cough after meals or when lying down. Asthma can include cough, wheeze, chest tightness, or symptoms triggered by exercise, cold air, or allergens.

A cough with fever, phlegm, chest discomfort, or feeling unwell may occur with an acute airway infection. Persistent or recurrent cough deserves assessment because causes such as chronic cough or other airway conditions need a tailored review.

Drink fluids, try a warm drink, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and dusty air. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and children over one year, but it is not suitable for infants. If reflux seems linked, avoid lying down soon after eating and note which foods or drinks worsen symptoms. A pharmacist can advise on suitable medicines; check first if you are pregnant, have asthma, or take regular treatment.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden throat swelling, confusion, faintness, or coughing blood. Seek prompt medical review for chest pain, a high fever, wheezing, dehydration, marked weakness, or a cough that is worsening or not settling. Children with noisy breathing, poor feeding, or unusual sleepiness need prompt assessment.

Ask whether the pattern suggests allergy, reflux, asthma, infection, or another airway cause. Tell the clinician when coughing happens, whether it is dry or productive, what triggers it, and which medicines or exposures came before it.
