What should you know about back microdermabrasion?

A device passes crystals or a textured tip over the back and removes loosened surface cells with suction. Results are cosmetic and gradual; the procedure cannot remove deep scars or treat the underlying causes of persistent acne.

Controlled abrasion thins the outer layer of dead skin cells without intentionally creating a deep wound. The operator adjusts contact and suction for the treatment area. Skin may look pink and feel dry, tight, or mildly tender afterward, particularly where the device makes repeated passes.

The technique is aimed at surface texture and dullness. Dark marks, inflamed pimples, deep depressions, and raised scars may need a different plan because aggressive abrasion can worsen irritation or pigment change.

Tell the practitioner about oral or topical acne treatment, retinoids, recent peels or laser procedures, recurrent cold sores, easy bruising, and a history of raised scars. Reschedule if the back has open wounds, sunburn, infection, an eczema flare, or severely inflamed acne.

For aftercare, wash gently, moisturise with a product that does not sting, and avoid scrubs or picking until sensitivity resolves. Limit heat, heavy sweating, and clothing friction while the area is irritated. Use sun protection when the treated back will be exposed.

Arrange prompt advice if redness spreads, pain becomes stronger, or the skin develops blisters, weeping, pus, pronounced swelling, or persistent crusting. These changes may reflect excessive injury, infection, or a product reaction. Breathing difficulty or swelling affecting the mouth or throat requires urgent medical care.
