Short answer

Pain at the back of the head can arise from neck muscles, joints, or headache disorders, but sudden or neurological symptoms need urgent assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common overlap
Head pain may occur together with neck stiffness or tenderness
Helpful record
Onset, triggers, duration, associated symptoms, and medicines taken
Urgent pattern
Sudden severe onset or a new neurological symptom

The short answer

The pattern, trigger, onset, and accompanying symptoms are more informative than the location alone.

What the location may indicate

Pain may begin near the base of the skull and spread upward or toward one side. Tight upper-neck muscles, irritated neck joints, prolonged screen posture, jaw clenching, or a primary headache can create overlapping sensations.

Neck-related pain may change with head position and occur with stiffness or tenderness. Migraine can present with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound, while irritation of nerves at the back of the scalp may cause brief shooting or burning pain. These patterns guide assessment but do not confirm a diagnosis.

Steps for a mild, familiar episode

Reduce the activity that triggered the pain, change position regularly, relax the jaw and shoulders, drink fluids, and try gentle neck movement that does not worsen symptoms. A warm pack over tense neck muscles may be comfortable if the skin is protected.

Record when the pain starts, how quickly it builds, how long it lasts, and whether light, sound, exertion, coughing, neck motion, or meals affect it. Before using pain medicine, check with a pharmacist if you have other conditions, take regular medicines, or need repeated doses.

When head pain is urgent

Call emergency services for a headache that reaches severe intensity suddenly, or pain with new weakness, facial droop, confusion, fainting, seizure, trouble speaking, loss of vision, severe imbalance, or a recent significant head injury.

Seek prompt medical care for headache with fever and a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, pregnancy-related concern, a new rash, new pain after neck injury, or a pattern that is worsening or distinctly different from previous headaches. Recurring pain that disrupts daily life also merits a planned evaluation.

Useful questions at your visit

Ask whether the features fit a neck-related or primary headache pattern, what examination is needed, and which movements or medicines are appropriate. Bring details about onset, injuries, vision changes, nausea, fever, limb symptoms, and the medicines or supplements you use.

Questions people ask

Can neck tension cause pain at the back of the head?

Tight or irritated structures in the upper neck can present with pain near the skull base and referred pain into the head. An examination is useful when this is new, persistent, or recurring.

Is pain at the back of the head a migraine?

Migraine can affect different parts of the head and may include nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Location by itself cannot determine whether the pain is migraine or another headache type.
