What should you know about back chills?

Chills happen when muscles contract and relax quickly as the body tries to change or regulate its temperature. They can appear before a fever becomes obvious. The location on your back does not identify one specific cause. Infection elsewhere may cause whole-body chills along with tiredness, aches, cough, sore throat, nausea, or urinary symptoms. A kidney infection commonly presents with fever or chills together with pain in the side or back and urinary changes. Influenza and pneumonia can also cause chills with respiratory symptoms. Travel history, mosquito exposure, or recent heat and cold exposure can change the list of possibilities.

Rest, use comfortable layers, and drink fluids if you can keep them down. Check your temperature and note when the chills begin, how long they last, and whether they follow medication, exercise, travel, or an exposure. Record associated pain, cough, breathing changes, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, headache, or urinary burning. Arrange medical advice if episodes recur, last beyond a short period, or occur with fever or a worsening local symptom. Do not start leftover antibiotics or malaria treatment without an assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, unusual drowsiness, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, a rapidly spreading rash, severe headache with a stiff neck, persistent vomiting, or severe back or side pain. Chills with signs of serious infection can progress quickly, especially in older adults, infants, pregnant people, or anyone with reduced immunity. After travel to a malaria-risk area, fever with chills needs prompt assessment; mention the countries visited and the dates of travel.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a respiratory, urinary, mosquito-borne, or another infection; whether you need an examination or tests; and which warning signs should bring you back urgently. Share your temperature readings, medicines, medical conditions, recent travel, and any change in urination or breathing.
