B12 blood test

Short answer
A B12 blood test checks whether vitamin B12 levels may be low and helps clinicians investigate anaemia, fatigue or nerve symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What it checks
- Vitamin B12 status in the context of symptoms and other results.
- Symptoms to mention
- Fatigue, anaemia symptoms, numbness, tingling or balance changes.
What this means
Vitamin B12 supports healthy red blood cells and the nervous system. A clinician may request the test for tiredness, pale skin, a sore tongue, numbness, tingling, balance changes or an abnormal blood count. The result is interpreted with symptoms, diet, medicines and other blood tests. A low result can relate to limited intake, reduced absorption or conditions affecting the gut, such as coeliac disease or Crohn's disease. A result within the laboratory range does not by itself explain every symptom.
What to do now
Ask whether you need to avoid food or medicines before the sample; preparation varies with the wider panel being checked. Tell the clinician about supplements, injections, a vegan or vegetarian diet, stomach or bowel surgery and medicines that affect absorption. Do not start high-dose supplements before testing unless advised, because treatment can alter later results. Keep the appointment where the result and next step will be explained.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for ongoing fatigue, breathlessness, palpitations, numbness, pins and needles, balance difficulty or weakness. Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting or new confusion. Neurological symptoms deserve timely assessment even when tiredness is mild.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Why are you checking B12? Do I need a full blood count or related tests? Could my medicines or diet affect absorption? If the result is low, do I need tablets or injections, and when will it be reviewed?

Questions people ask
Does a B12 blood test diagnose the cause of fatigue?
