Azo and a urine test

A urine test can look for signs of inflammation, blood or infection and may be followed by laboratory testing. Azo products containing phenazopyridine can turn urine orange or red-orange and may interfere with interpretation of some urine checks. Tell the clinician or laboratory if you have taken it, including when and how much. Burning, urgency or frequent urination can have causes other than a urinary tract infection, including prostate enlargement or kidney infection.

Before providing a sample, ask the service whether to pause Azo and for how long; do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. Follow collection instructions carefully so the sample is not contaminated. Bring a list of medicines and describe fever, pain, blood, discharge and changes in urine. A urine test result needs to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination.

Seek prompt care for fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, inability to pass urine or worsening symptoms. These features can point to a kidney infection or obstruction and should not be covered up with a urinary pain reliever. If symptoms persist despite a reassuring initial test, arrange follow-up.
