Ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease. It often presents with pain, warmth, swelling, and prolonged stiffness in several joints, commonly including the hands and wrists. Inflammation may injure joints and can affect other parts of the body even when day-to-day pain varies. Disease-modifying treatment targets that inflammatory process; pain relief alone does not show that it is controlled. Ayurvedic diets, herbs, oils, massage, or cleansing practices should therefore be viewed as optional complementary measures, not replacements for treatment that protects joints and wider health.

Tell the rheumatology team exactly which Ayurvedic products you use or plan to use, including ingredients and doses. Some preparations may interact with disease-modifying drugs, anti-inflammatory medicines, steroids, or blood thinners; others may affect the liver, kidneys, blood cells, or bleeding. Do not stop prescribed medicine suddenly because symptoms improve. During a flare, balance gentle joint movement with rest, protect swollen joints from heavy loading, and follow the exercise advice given by a physiotherapist or occupational therapist. Avoid vigorous massage directly over hot, markedly swollen joints.

People taking immune-modifying treatment should contact their medical team promptly for fever, chills, a new cough, painful urination, an infected-looking wound, or other signs of infection. A single joint that becomes suddenly very painful, hot, and swollen also needs urgent assessment. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness, or a severe blistering rash after a medicine or herbal product. Report yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, unusual bruising, or persistent vomiting without waiting for a routine visit.

Ask how the team distinguishes symptom relief from control of joint inflammation, what monitoring your medicines require, and how to handle treatment if you become unwell. Bring containers or photographs of supplement labels. Request specific advice about heat, massage, hand exercises, splints, and activity changes when joints are swollen.
