Ayurvedic treatment for perioral dermatitis

A simpler skin routine and clinician-guided treatment are safer starting points. Do not apply a topical steroid to the face for this rash unless the prescriber has specifically advised it.

Perioral dermatitis commonly presents with clusters of small red or skin-coloured bumps around the mouth, nose or eyes. Burning, tightness, flaking or sensitivity can accompany the bumps, and a narrow border beside the lips may remain clear. Acne, rosacea, eczema and infection can look similar.

Heavy oils and balms may trap heat and aggravate some facial eruptions. Fragrant herbs, essential oils and mixed powders can also cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, making the original pattern harder to recognise.

Pause new Ayurvedic and cosmetic products, wash with lukewarm water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and avoid scrubs, peels and thick occlusive creams. Record products used on the face, including toothpaste, sunscreen, makeup and any inhaled or nasal steroid that may contact the skin. Do not abruptly stop a prescribed steroid medicine without speaking to its prescriber.

A dermatologist may recommend a topical medicine or, for more extensive disease, an oral medicine. Improvement can be gradual, and an early flare may follow withdrawal of a facial steroid. Follow the agreed plan rather than switching repeatedly between remedies.

Seek timely assessment when the eruption involves the eyelids, is spreading, forms crusts or pus, or causes notable pain. Eye redness, visual change, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or blistering after a product needs prompt medical attention. Arrange a routine review if a simplified routine does not help or the rash keeps returning.

Ask which diagnosis fits the distribution, which products should be paused, and how to handle any steroid previously used on the face. Show photographs of earlier flares and bring ingredient lists for Ayurvedic preparations so the clinician can look for irritants and possible medicine interactions.
