Ayurvedic medicine and high blood pressure

Some traditional products can affect blood pressure, kidney function, or the action of prescribed medicines. Their contents and strength may vary, so a clinician or pharmacist needs the full ingredient list before advising whether a product can be added safely.

Hypertension means pressure in the arteries remains higher than it should be across properly taken readings. It often causes no noticeable symptoms, which is why feeling well cannot confirm that it is controlled.

Persistent hypertension can strain the heart, brain, blood vessels, eyes, and kidneys. Chronic kidney disease, obesity, and obstructive sleep apnoea may influence blood pressure and can change the treatment plan.

Take prescribed tablets as directed and record home readings using a validated upper-arm monitor. Sit quietly beforehand, support the arm, and use the cuff size recommended for you.

Reduce excess salt, remain physically active within your ability, avoid smoking, and attend planned reviews. Before using an Ayurvedic herb or supplement, check whether it may alter potassium, fluid balance, kidney function, or the effects of your current medicines.

Seek emergency care for chest pressure or pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, sudden facial droop, one-sided weakness, new speech difficulty, sudden loss of vision, or an abrupt severe headache. These can signal angina, stroke, or another emergency regardless of a recent blood pressure reading.

Contact your clinician promptly if repeated readings are far outside the target they set, treatment causes troublesome dizziness, or you develop swelling, reduced urination, or worsening breathlessness.

Bring your readings, medicine list, and any supplement containers. Ask about your personal target, when to repeat measurements, which laboratory checks are appropriate, and which ingredients could interfere with treatment.
