Avoiding burnout at work

Short answer
Lower burnout risk by identifying controllable pressures, agreeing realistic priorities, protecting recovery time and seeking support before exhaustion becomes entrenched.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Exhaustion, detachment from work and reduced effectiveness can occur together.
- Workplace action
- Clear priorities and boundaries can reduce repeated overload.
- Clinical check
- Persistent symptoms may overlap with depression, anxiety, insomnia or physical illness.
Recognising the pattern
Burnout is linked to prolonged workplace stress that has not been managed successfully. The pattern can include depleted energy, growing mental distance or cynicism about work, and feeling less effective. Difficulty concentrating, irritability, headaches, altered appetite, poor sleep and reduced motivation may accompany it. These experiences can overlap with depression, anxiety, insomnia and physical illness, so persistent symptoms should not be self-diagnosed as burnout alone.
Reduce strain and restore recovery
List the tasks, interruptions and expectations that consume the most energy, then separate what you can change from what needs discussion with a manager. Agree priorities, clarify what can be delayed, schedule uninterrupted focus periods and take actual breaks away from the screen. Where possible, define when you are reachable and switch off work notifications outside those boundaries.
Recovery also needs sleep, regular meals, movement and contact with supportive people. Brief relaxation exercises can settle acute tension, but they cannot compensate for an unsafe or unmanageable workload. Use occupational health, an employee support service, a trusted manager or a workplace representative when staffing, bullying, discrimination or unclear responsibilities are driving the problem. Keep factual notes of workload concerns and agreements.
When professional support is needed
Book a healthcare appointment when exhaustion, sleep disturbance, anxiety or low mood persists, affects daily functioning, or continues during time away from work. A clinician can check for mental and physical conditions with similar features and discuss treatment or temporary work adjustments. Seek urgent help now if you feel unable to keep yourself safe, have thoughts of self-harm or suicide, or are in immediate danger; contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department.
Prompts for a healthcare visit
Tell the clinician when symptoms began, how sleep and concentration have changed, what happens on days away from work, and whether substances or medicines are affecting coping. Ask what else could explain the symptoms, which support options fit your needs, and whether a written recommendation for workplace adjustments would help.

Questions people ask
Will taking a holiday fix burnout?
Time away may provide recovery, but symptoms can return if excessive workload, low control, conflict or unclear expectations remain unchanged.
How can I raise burnout concerns with my manager?
Use specific examples of workload and impact, identify the most urgent priorities, and request concrete changes such as revised deadlines, protected focus time or clearer responsibilities.
Is burnout the same as depression?
No. They can share features, but depression is not limited to work. A clinician should assess persistent low mood, loss of interest, hopelessness or impaired functioning.
