How to avoid sunstroke

How the structures involved in Heat Stroke differ from normal

Short answer

Prevent sunstroke by limiting heat exposure, drinking fluids regularly, wearing light clothing, and responding early to signs of heat illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Plan outdoor activity for cooler parts of the day, take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning, and never remain in a parked vehicle.

What sunstroke means

Sunstroke is another name for heat stroke, a medical emergency in which the body can no longer control its temperature. It can develop after prolonged heat exposure or strenuous activity in hot conditions, and it can affect the brain and other organs.

Warning signs can include very hot skin, confusion, unusual behaviour, collapse, seizure, severe headache, nausea or vomiting. Sweating may be present or absent, so dry skin is not required for heat stroke.

Ways to reduce heat risk

Drink water at regular intervals rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. Increase rest breaks during exercise or outdoor work, choose breathable loose-fitting clothes, and use a hat or umbrella for shade. Move indoors if you start to feel weak, dizzy, unusually tired or sick.

Allow time to adjust after arriving in a hotter climate or returning to outdoor activity. Check on children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone whose health condition or medicine may affect temperature control or hydration. A clinician or pharmacist can explain whether a medicine changes heat tolerance; do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services immediately if someone in the heat becomes confused, collapses, has a seizure, cannot drink safely, or is difficult to wake. Move them to a cooler place, remove excess clothing, and cool the skin with cool water, wet cloths, or cold packs around the neck, armpits and groin while help is coming.

Do not give fluids to a person who is confused, unconscious, vomiting repeatedly, or unable to swallow. Do not use fever medicine for suspected heat stroke because the problem is environmental heat, not the body response that those medicines target.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether your medicines or health conditions change your fluid needs or ability to cope with heat. If you work or exercise outdoors, discuss a safe plan for hydration, rest, acclimatisation, and recovery after a previous heat illness.

Questions people ask

Is sunstroke the same as heat exhaustion?

No. Heat exhaustion is an earlier heat illness that may cause heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache or nausea. Heat stroke involves failure of temperature control and signs such as confusion, collapse or seizure, and needs emergency care.

Can heat stroke happen when someone is still sweating?

Yes. A person with heat stroke may have sweaty or dry skin. Changes in alertness or behaviour during heat exposure are more important warning signs than whether sweating is present.

Should I give a sports drink to someone with suspected sunstroke?

Only offer a drink if the person is fully alert and swallowing normally while arranging appropriate help. Give nothing by mouth if they are confused, drowsy, unconscious or vomiting repeatedly.
