Short answer

You can reduce ingrown hairs by avoiding very close hair removal, shaving with the hair direction and limiting skin friction afterward.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Shaving direction
Move the razor with hair growth rather than against it.
Technique
Use light pressure and avoid stretching the skin.
Do not
Squeeze, dig into or pluck an inflamed bump.

Lower the chance of trapped hairs

Curved or coarse hairs can re-enter the skin after cutting, while a hair may also become trapped beneath dead surface cells. Prevention focuses on leaving less opportunity for a sharp, short tip to grow inward and on reducing inflammation around the follicle.

What an ingrown hair looks like

An ingrown hair often appears as a small raised bump after shaving, waxing or plucking. It may itch, feel tender or show a curved hair beneath the surface. Inflammation can leave a darker mark after the bump settles, particularly when the area is squeezed or repeatedly irritated.

Clusters of shaving bumps are a common presentation of pseudofolliculitis barbae. Pus-filled bumps can also occur with folliculitis, while rough bumps that persist without a visible trapped hair may have another explanation. Appearance and timing help a clinician separate these problems.

Adjust your hair-removal routine

If possible, pause shaving until irritation settles. Before shaving, soften the hair with warm water and a lubricating gel. Use a clean, sharp razor with light pressure, follow the direction of growth and avoid stretching the skin or repeatedly passing over the same spot.

Rinse the blade between strokes, then apply a cool compress and a bland, non-irritating moisturiser. Do not dig out, squeeze or pluck an inflamed bump, because this can injure the skin and increase discoloration or scarring. For frequent recurrences, trimming above skin level or discussing longer-term hair reduction may help.

When bumps should be examined

Arrange care for bumps that keep returning, cause persistent dark marks or scars, or do not improve after changing hair-removal technique. A clinician can confirm whether hairs are trapped and recommend treatment suited to the area and degree of inflammation.

Seek prompt assessment for rapidly spreading redness, worsening pain, warmth, marked swelling, pus drainage or fever. These features can accompany a skin infection and are not reasons to probe the bump at home.

Plan safer hair removal

Ask whether your bumps represent trapped hairs, razor bumps or folliculitis; which exfoliating or anti-inflammatory products suit your skin; and how to use them without irritation. If considering laser hair removal, discuss skin tone, hair colour, active inflammation and the clinician's experience with your skin type.

Questions people ask

Does exfoliation prevent every ingrown hair?

Gentle exfoliation may help some trapped hairs reach the surface, but aggressive scrubbing can inflame follicles and worsen marks. Choose a method appropriate for the body area and your skin sensitivity.

Can waxing cause ingrown hairs?

Any method that removes or cuts hair can be followed by inward growth. Technique, hair shape, friction and inflammation all influence whether a bump forms.

Can I pull out a visible ingrown hair?

Avoid digging or pulling the hair from its root while the skin is inflamed. Manipulation can introduce infection and increase the chance of discoloration or scarring.
