Tretinoin is a topical retinoid that changes how skin cells mature and shed. It may be prescribed for acne and selected other skin concerns. Dryness, tightness, peeling, stinging, and redness can occur, particularly while the skin is adjusting.

A stronger product is not automatically more suitable. The prescriber chooses a formulation by considering the condition being treated, skin sensitivity, other products in the routine, and previous retinoid use.

Apply the prescribed amount to clean, fully dry skin and keep it away from the eyes, lips, nostril creases, and broken skin. Follow the instructed schedule rather than adding extra applications when a dose is missed.

Use a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser, and daytime sun protection. Introducing scrubs, waxing, harsh exfoliating acids, or other irritating acne products at the same time can make inflammation harder to control. Tell the prescriber if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding before using topical tretinoin.

Contact the prescriber if irritation is severe, persistent, or accompanied by marked swelling, blistering, crusting, or painful raw skin. They can assess whether the product should be paused and whether the frequency or formulation needs changing.

Get urgent medical help for facial or throat swelling, widespread hives, breathing difficulty, or faintness, as these can signal a serious allergic reaction.

Confirm the product name, strength, vehicle, application frequency, areas to avoid, and which existing skincare products to stop or separate. Ask what degree of irritation is expected and what adjustment to make if it becomes uncomfortable.
