A balm or ointment forms a protective layer over dry skin. That layer slows water loss, while emollient ingredients smooth gaps between rough surface cells. This can help skin feel more flexible and may reduce splitting caused by dryness, repeated handwashing, friction or dry air.

The older Cracked Skin Relief CICA Balm name used “CICA” in the sense of skin repair; it should not be assumed to mean that every version contains Centella asiatica. Read the ingredient list if you are avoiding a known allergen, have reacted to oat-containing skincare, or need a fragrance-free product.

Stop using it if application causes continuing burning, swelling, hives or a worsening rash. A moisturiser should not replace prescribed eczema or psoriasis medicine unless the prescriber has advised that change.

Arrange a clinician or dermatologist review if cracks are deep, repeatedly bleed, remain painful, keep returning, or do not improve with careful moisturising. Review is also sensible when cracking covers a large area or comes with a persistent itchy, thick or scaly rash.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness or discoloration, warmth, swelling, increasing pain, pus, yellow crusting, fever or feeling unwell, because these can signal infection through the damaged barrier. People with diabetes, poor circulation, reduced sensation or weakened immunity should get early advice for a foot crack, open sore or slow-healing area.

Ask whether the pattern looks like simple dryness, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis or an infection. It can also help to ask which cleanser and moisturiser texture suit the affected body area, whether a prescription treatment is needed, and which workplace or footwear changes could prevent new fissures. Bring the container or a clear photograph of its ingredient label if you suspect a reaction.
