Automatic ECG machines

Sticky electrodes placed on the chest and limbs detect electrical signals, which the machine displays as waveforms. The recording is quick and does not send electricity into the body.

The tracing gives information about heart rate, rhythm and electrical conduction at the time it is recorded. Automated wording can flag patterns for attention, but movement, poor electrode contact, body position and normal variation can affect the result.

A qualified clinician should check the tracing in the context of your symptoms, examination, medicines and earlier ECGs. A normal recording may not capture a problem that comes and goes, while an abnormal label from the software does not by itself confirm heart disease.

Tell the person performing the ECG about current symptoms, implanted heart devices and medicines. You may need to expose the chest; a gown and privacy should be available. Skin may be cleaned, and small areas of hair may need trimming so electrodes adhere properly.

Lie still, breathe normally and avoid talking while the tracing is collected. Afterward, ask who will interpret it and how you will receive the result. Do not alter prescribed treatment because of words printed by the machine without clinical advice.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain, severe shortness of breath, collapse, or a rapid or irregular heartbeat accompanied by fainting, confusion or marked weakness. Do not wait for access to an ECG machine before seeking help.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for recurring palpitations, unexplained dizziness, reduced exercise tolerance or near-fainting, even if a previous ECG was described as normal. A clinician may choose a longer recording when episodes are intermittent.

Ask whether the tracing quality was adequate, whether the clinician agrees with the automated interpretation, and whether symptoms were present during the recording. Clarify whether you need comparison with an earlier ECG, monitoring over a longer period or another assessment.
