What should you know about autologous platelet rich plasma?

A clinician draws blood and processes it to separate plasma containing platelets before administering it. Because the preparation comes from you, it is described as autologous. That does not remove injection-related risks or mean it will help every condition.

PRP is used in different clinical settings, including selected hair-loss and musculoskeletal treatment plans. Its suitability, injection technique and expected benefit depend on the diagnosis and body area. The label alone does not describe a standardised result.

Temporary soreness, swelling, bruising or bleeding can follow the blood draw or injection. Other concerns include infection, irritation of nearby structures and a flare of pain. Results may be limited or absent, and further sessions may be proposed only after reviewing response and clinical need.

Obtain a diagnosis before arranging PRP. Tell the practitioner about bleeding or platelet disorders, active infection, cancer treatment, pregnancy, fainting with blood draws and every medicine or supplement you use. Do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medicine without instruction from the clinician who manages it.

Ask who prepares and injects the product, how sterility is maintained, which structure is being targeted and whether imaging guidance is relevant. Follow the clinic's advice on skin care, activity and pain relief after the procedure, and keep a record of any unexpected symptoms.

Contact the treating clinician promptly if redness spreads, swelling or pain keeps increasing, pus appears, fever develops, or the treated area becomes unusually hot. New numbness, weakness, severe headache or loss of function after an injection also needs urgent assessment.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, collapse, chest pain or rapidly developing facial or throat swelling. These symptoms are not routine post-injection effects.

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, what improvement would count as meaningful and when it should be assessed. Clarify alternatives, likely discomfort, aftercare, reasons to postpone treatment and what happens if there is no useful response.
