Audio hearing test: what to expect

The term usually refers to pure-tone audiometry, although a hearing appointment may also include speech testing, examination of the ear canal, or checks of middle-ear function. You respond when you hear tones through headphones or another listening device. The test does not diagnose every possible cause by itself; the pattern helps a clinician decide what evaluation may be useful next.

Results show the quietest sound detected across a range of pitches. A difference between air-conduction and bone-conduction responses can help distinguish sound blocked in the outer or middle ear from reduced function in the inner ear or hearing nerve. The clinician also considers whether both ears have a similar pattern and whether speech is clear at an audible level.

Earwax, congestion, background noise, and difficulty understanding the instructions can affect findings. A result is interpreted together with your symptoms, ear examination, noise exposure, medicines, and previous tests.

Avoid loud sound shortly before the appointment when practical, and bring any hearing aids, earlier hearing reports, and a list of medicines. Tell the tester about ringing, dizziness, ear pain, discharge, recent infection, or a hearing change that affects one side more than the other.

During testing, respond even when a tone is very faint and ask for the instructions again if needed. Follow-up may involve treating a blockage, repeating the test, arranging a specialist assessment, or discussing communication strategies and hearing devices.

Seek urgent medical assessment for hearing that drops suddenly, especially in one ear, rather than waiting for a routine hearing test. Prompt care is also appropriate when hearing loss follows a head injury or occurs with facial weakness, severe dizziness, new neurological symptoms, intense ear pain, bleeding, or discharge.

Ask whether the pattern suggests sound blockage or inner-ear hearing loss, whether the ears differ, and whether speech testing changes the interpretation. You can also ask if earwax or middle-ear pressure may have influenced the result and when a repeat test is appropriate.
