Can a rabies vaccine be given at home?

Correct storage, product selection, injection technique and documentation all matter. After a possible exposure, a clinician must also decide whether wound care, vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin are needed. A mobile service is appropriate only when it is licensed, uses authorised products and provides clinical assessment and follow-up.

Preventive vaccination may be advised before exposure for people whose work, travel or activities bring them into contact with animals. It does not remove the need for medical assessment after a bite or scratch.

Post-exposure care is time-sensitive and depends on the type of contact, wound location, animal, local rabies risk and previous vaccination. Waiting for the animal to look ill or for symptoms to appear is unsafe because preventive treatment is intended to act before illness develops.

Immediately wash and flush a bite, scratch or saliva-contaminated wound thoroughly with soap and running water. Apply an appropriate antiseptic if available, avoid tightly closing the wound yourself, and contact an emergency department or public health service without delay. Tell them where the contact occurred, what animal was involved and whether you have previously received rabies vaccine.

Do not attempt to catch an unfamiliar animal and do not delay care while trying to locate vaccination records. Keep any safe information about the animal and report the incident through the local route advised by healthcare staff.

Seek urgent assessment after a bite or scratch from a bat or mammal that may carry rabies, or when saliva has contacted broken skin, the eyes, nose or mouth. Wounds to the face, head, neck or hands, deep wounds, and any exposure involving a child require especially prompt attention. Treat an uncertain exposure as a reason to call for professional advice now.

Confirm whether the contact counts as an exposure, whether immunoglobulin is indicated, where each dose will be given and how missed appointments are handled. Also ask how the vaccine record will be documented for travel or future care and which reactions require medical review.
