At-home laser hair reduction: a practical safety guide

Many products marketed as home laser actually use IPL. Both aim light at pigment in the hair, but the technology, energy controls, and eligible skin-tone range vary by model. Reduction is a more accurate expectation than complete removal.

The light is meant to heat pigment within the hair shaft and follicle. Darker, coarser hair often provides a clearer target than very light, red, grey, or white hair. Pigment in the surrounding skin can also absorb energy, which is why every device has its own allowed skin-tone range and settings.

Hair grows in cycles, so one session cannot reach every follicle at the same stage. Hormonal hair growth may continue despite cosmetic reduction. Hirsutism can present with coarse hair in androgen-sensitive areas and sometimes warrants assessment for an underlying hormonal cause.

Match your natural skin tone and hair colour to the manufacturer's chart, then complete the instructed patch test. Shave if directed so light energy is not wasted on hair above the surface. Keep the treatment window flat against clean, dry skin and follow the schedule and setting progression in the manual.

Do not flash over tattoos, dark moles, wounds, inflamed bumps, sunburn, or areas the manual excludes. Avoid plucking or waxing if the instructions require hair to remain in the follicle. Never look into the flash or use the handset near the eye. Pause when the skin becomes more painful than the expected brief warmth.

Seek timely care for blisters, an open wound, severe pain, spreading redness, pus, or a lasting patch of darker or lighter skin. Eye pain or any visual change after a flash needs urgent assessment. Recurrent deep lumps, tunnels, or drainage in hair-bearing folds can occur with hidradenitis suppurativa and should be evaluated rather than repeatedly treated with a home device.
