At-home IPL for broken capillaries: what to know

Many consumer IPL devices are intended for hair reduction rather than vascular treatment. Using one outside its stated purpose can expose the skin to heat without reliably targeting the vessel.

So-called broken capillaries are usually small widened surface vessels rather than vessels that have literally snapped. They can occur on the cheeks or around the nose and may become more noticeable with sun exposure, temperature changes, or facial flushing. Rosacea can present with persistent facial redness and visible vessels, but a clinician should distinguish it from other causes.

Clinic IPL and pulsed dye laser systems use controlled settings selected for vessel colour, depth, location, and the surrounding skin. A home hair-removal handset is not equivalent to these systems, even when both use flashes of light.

Read the exact model's instructions and confirm that facial vascular lesions are an approved use. Do not flash over eyelids, tattoos, dark moles, open skin, or an area the manual excludes. If the device is compatible, perform the recommended patch test, begin only at an allowed setting, wear any specified eye protection, and stop if pain or marked heat develops.

Avoid treating recently tanned or sunburned skin. A dermatologist can examine persistent vessels and discuss options such as an IPL photofacial or pulsed dye laser treatment. Leg veins need separate assessment because treatment choice depends on their size, pattern, and whether deeper vein problems are present.

Arrange prompt medical review after a light treatment if you develop blistering, an open wound, severe or increasing pain, spreading swelling, eye pain, or a change in vision. Stop using the device while the skin heals. New bleeding, a rapidly changing spot, or a vessel-like mark with a lump also deserves examination rather than further home treatment.

Ask whether the vessels fit rosacea or another diagnosis, whether your skin tone or medicines alter light-treatment risk, and which professional device is suited to the vessel pattern. For leg vessels, ask whether an examination for varicose veins is needed and whether sclerotherapy is relevant.
