At-home genital wart removal: what is safe?

A clinician can first confirm what the growth is and, when appropriate, prescribe a medicine designed for you to apply to external genital skin. Lesions inside the vagina, anus, or urethra, or on the cervix, need clinician-directed assessment and treatment.

Genital warts are growths associated with certain types of human papillomavirus, but several harmless or infectious skin conditions can look similar. Removing a bump without confirming the diagnosis can injure delicate skin and delay the right care.

Patient-applied prescription treatment is different from self-treating with an over-the-counter hand or foot wart product. Prescription options are selected for the lesion site and your health circumstances. Treatment removes visible warts but does not necessarily clear the virus, so warts can return.

Arrange a sexual-health, dermatology, gynaecology, or urology appointment for a new genital growth. Until it is assessed, avoid picking, shaving over, tying off, or sharing products on the area. Keep the skin gently clean and dry.

If a clinician prescribes a home-applied medicine, ask them to show exactly which bumps to treat and which nearby skin to avoid. Follow the product instructions for application and washing, and report severe irritation. Mention pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, reduced immunity, and every medicine already used on the area because these details can change the suitable option.

Seek prompt medical assessment if a growth is bleeding, ulcerated, darkly pigmented, hard, fixed to deeper tissue, rapidly changing, or causing difficulty passing urine or stool. These features do not identify a single diagnosis, but they require direct examination.

Contact a clinician if treatment causes marked swelling, blistering, an open wound, spreading redness, discharge, fever, or pain that is difficult to manage. Also return if the diagnosis remains uncertain, the lesions worsen, or prescribed treatment does not help.

Ask whether the growth has the typical appearance of a genital wart, whether any lesion needs sampling, and which option fits its location. You can also ask how to protect surrounding skin, what reaction is expected, when to stop treatment, whether testing for other sexually transmitted infections is appropriate, and whether HPV vaccination is relevant for you.
