A device labelled diode is not automatically suitable for every complexion or hair colour. Darker skin can absorb more light energy, increasing the risk of burns or pigment change if the device is unsuitable. Very light, grey or red hair contains less of the pigment the device targets and may respond poorly.

Do not treat eyelids or aim flashes toward the eyes. Avoid tattoos, dark moles, open wounds, infections and recently sun-exposed or tanned skin unless the manufacturer specifically confirms safe use. Hormonal hair growth such as hirsutism may warrant medical assessment alongside cosmetic management.

Check the stated skin-tone and hair-colour range, perform the recommended patch test and wait for delayed irritation before covering a wider area. Shave as instructed rather than waxing or plucking, because the follicle needs pigment for the light to target. Start at an allowed low setting and never exceed the manual's schedule.

Keep the treatment window clean, avoid overlapping flashes and cool the area gently if the instructions permit. Use sun protection on exposed skin. Review medicines and topical treatments with a pharmacist or clinician when they can increase light sensitivity.

Stop treatment and obtain medical advice for blistering, a burn, severe or escalating pain, pronounced swelling, crusting, or skin that becomes distinctly lighter or darker. Spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever can signal infection. Eye pain or any visual change after a flash requires urgent assessment.

Ask which light technology fits your skin tone and hair type, and whether a medicine or skin disorder changes the risk. If hair growth is sudden, coarse or accompanied by menstrual changes or other symptoms, ask whether an underlying hormonal cause should be assessed.
