At-home cherry angioma removal: what to know

Home removal can cause bleeding, burns, infection and scarring. More importantly, a red or dark spot should be identified correctly before it is destroyed, because not every vascular-looking mark is a cherry angioma.

A cherry angioma is a benign cluster of small blood vessels in the skin. It often appears as a smooth or slightly raised red, purple or dark spot and may bleed if scratched. Appearance alone is not enough to confirm the diagnosis when a mark is new, changing or unusual.

Household acids, heated tools, needles and products intended for other skin growths do not selectively treat the vessel. They can damage surrounding tissue while leaving part of the spot behind.

Leave the area intact and avoid picking or shaving directly over it. If clothing catches on the spot, cover it with a simple non-stick dressing until it can be assessed. A clinician can examine the mark and discuss options such as vascular laser treatment or electrosurgery when removal is appropriate.

If it bleeds after minor trauma, apply steady pressure with clean gauze. Do not repeatedly lift the gauze to check, as this can disturb the forming clot.

Arrange a skin examination if the spot grows, changes colour or shape, repeatedly bleeds without being knocked, becomes painful, forms a persistent crust, or looks unlike your other marks. Seek prompt care for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure or for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus or fever after an attempted removal.

Ask what features support the diagnosis, whether removal is medically necessary or cosmetic, which method fits the spot's size and location, how bleeding will be controlled, and what colour change or scarring may follow. Mention medicines or conditions that affect bleeding or wound healing.
