Asthma and high blood pressure

Continue prescribed treatment unless a clinician tells you to change it. A medication review can help identify a blood-pressure medicine that worsens wheezing or an asthma medicine that causes a temporary fast heartbeat or tremor.

Asthma narrows and inflames the airways, while high blood pressure concerns the force of blood against artery walls. One does not automatically cause the other, and high blood pressure often produces no noticeable symptoms.

Some beta blockers used for heart or blood-pressure problems can tighten the airways in susceptible people. Reliever inhalers and steroid tablets can also influence pulse or blood pressure, particularly when used frequently. These possibilities call for review, not an abrupt stop.

Take both sets of medicines exactly as prescribed and bring your inhalers, tablets and supplements to appointments. Record home blood-pressure readings if advised, and note whether breathlessness, wheeze, palpitations or dizziness began after a medicine change.

Use your written asthma action plan, check inhaler technique and avoid relying on extra reliever doses without review. Regular movement, less dietary salt, avoiding tobacco smoke and maintaining a comfortable weight can support cardiovascular health without replacing treatment.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, fainting, new weakness on one side, facial droop, confusion, or crushing chest pain. Follow the emergency steps in your asthma plan while help is coming.

Arrange prompt clinical review when wheezing worsens after starting a medicine, reliever treatment is needed more often, blood-pressure readings remain outside the range your clinician set, or headaches and visual changes occur with a markedly elevated reading.

Ask whether any current medicine can affect the airways, pulse or blood pressure; what home readings should trigger contact; and whether your inhaler technique and asthma action plan need updating. Mention snoring, daytime sleepiness, ankle swelling or reduced exercise tolerance because these details may change the assessment.
