Headache while taking ashwagandha

Pause the supplement if the headache is new or repeatedly follows a dose, check the complete product label, and seek clinical advice if it persists, worsens or comes with other symptoms.

The symptom could reflect sensitivity to ashwagandha, another ingredient in a combined supplement, or an interaction with medicine. The timing matters: note whether pain starts soon after a dose, appears after a dose increase or improves when the product is withheld.

Common non-supplement explanations include dehydration, missed meals, poor sleep, caffeine withdrawal, stress and viral illness. Heat exhaustion can present with headache, thirst, dizziness and heavy sweating, while dengue fever can present with fever, severe headache, muscle or joint pain, nausea or rash. Do not take another ashwagandha dose until you have considered the connection with a clinician or pharmacist. Call emergency services for a sudden extremely severe headache, weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty speaking, seizure, fainting, new confusion, loss of vision, or headache after a serious head injury. Urgent assessment is also needed for headache with a stiff neck and fever, persistent vomiting, severe eye pain, or signs of heat illness such as confusion or collapse.
