What should you know about aseptic bursitis?

Short answer
Aseptic bursitis is inflammation of a cushioning sac without infection, often linked to pressure, friction, injury or overuse.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Squeezing or attempting to drain the swelling at home
Direct answer
It can cause local swelling, tenderness and discomfort during movement or pressure. Symptoms may settle when the irritated area is protected, but a clinician may need to exclude infection, gout, bleeding or injury when the cause is unclear.
What aseptic bursitis means
Bursae are small, fluid-containing sacs that reduce rubbing where skin, tendons or muscles move over bone. Repeated kneeling, leaning, repetitive motion or a direct bump can irritate one and increase its fluid. The word aseptic means that infection is not causing the inflammation. Location matters: a swollen bursa near the elbow, knee, hip or shoulder can affect movement in different ways.
Appearance alone cannot always distinguish aseptic bursitis from an infected bursa. A clinician may assess warmth, redness, skin damage, fever, recent injury, medicines and underlying conditions before deciding whether testing is needed.
What you can do
Reduce the activity or pressure that provokes symptoms, cushion the area and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if comfortable. Keep nearby joints moving gently rather than forcing painful motion. Do not pierce, squeeze or drain the swelling yourself because this can introduce infection.
A clinician can advise whether anti-inflammatory medicine is suitable after considering stomach, kidney, heart, pregnancy and medication factors. Persistent or large swelling may be assessed with aspiration, while a cortisone injection is reserved for selected situations after infection has been considered.
When to seek medical care
Arrange prompt assessment if the swelling is hot, increasingly red, rapidly enlarging or draining fluid, or if you have fever, chills or feel generally unwell. These features can accompany infection and should not be managed as routine irritation. Seek urgent care after a significant injury if the joint looks deformed, you cannot use the limb, or pain is severe.
Book a routine review when symptoms keep returning, restrict normal activity, follow a new medicine, or fail to improve with pressure relief. Mention immune suppression, diabetes, blood-thinning medicine, gout, a nearby cut or a recent procedure because these details may change the assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what supports the diagnosis, whether infection or a crystal condition needs exclusion, and which activities should be modified. You can also ask whether medicine is safe with your health history, what aspiration would clarify, and which changes should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Can aseptic bursitis become infected?
A bursa can become infected if bacteria enter through broken skin or another route. Increasing warmth, redness, drainage, fever or feeling unwell warrants prompt medical assessment.
Does every swollen bursa need aspiration?
No. A clinician may consider aspiration when the diagnosis is uncertain, infection or crystals need investigation, or a large swelling requires specific management.
Should I stop moving the nearby joint?
Protect the bursa from pressure and provoking activity, but gentle comfortable movement can help prevent stiffness unless an injury or clinician's advice requires restriction.
