ARV rabies vaccine: what patients should know

After a possible exposure, do not wait for symptoms. Wash the wound promptly and contact an emergency department or public-health service so they can assess the animal, the type of contact, your previous vaccinations, and the treatment you need.

Rabies vaccination helps the immune system develop protection against the rabies virus. It may be offered before exposure to people whose work, travel, or activities create a recognised risk. Vaccination before exposure does not remove the need for medical care after a bite or scratch.

Post-exposure care may include a course of vaccine and, for some people who were not previously vaccinated, rabies immunoglobulin placed around the wound. The exact plan depends on previous vaccination, wound category, exposure site, immune health, and local public-health guidance.

Immediately wash bites, scratches, and saliva-contaminated broken skin thoroughly with soap and running water. Seek professional assessment even if the wound looks minor. Contact with saliva on intact skin is different from saliva entering an eye, mouth, or open wound, so describe the contact precisely.

Bring any available vaccination record and details about the animal, location, timing, and whether the animal can be safely observed by the authorities. Do not try to catch an unfamiliar animal yourself. Attend every scheduled vaccine visit and tell the treating team if a dose is delayed rather than restarting or changing the plan on your own.

Get urgent medical advice after a bite or scratch from a mammal that may carry rabies, or when its saliva contacts broken skin, the eyes, or the mouth. This remains urgent when the incident happened while travelling or when the animal appeared healthy.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, collapse, or widespread hives after vaccination. Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site can occur; ask the vaccination team how to manage these symptoms and report anything severe or worsening.

Confirm whether the contact counts as an exposure, whether immunoglobulin is needed, and where each remaining vaccine dose will be given. Tell the clinician about earlier rabies vaccines, immune-suppressing conditions or medicines, pregnancy, allergies, and any treatment already received elsewhere.
