Artificial insemination and embryo transfer explained

With intrauterine insemination, fertilisation would occur inside the body. Embryo transfer is part of IVF treatment, after eggs have been collected and fertilised in a laboratory. They are distinct procedures chosen for different fertility circumstances.

For IUI, the clinic times treatment around ovulation and passes a thin catheter through the cervix to release prepared sperm into the uterus. The ovaries may be monitored during a natural cycle or after medicines that stimulate follicle development.

Seek emergency care for fainting, sudden intense one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, chest pain or significant breathing difficulty. If a pregnancy test is positive, pain or bleeding requires timely advice because the pregnancy location may need checking.
