Artificial induction of labour: what to expect

The maternity team recommends a method after considering the reason for induction, pregnancy stage, cervical examination, previous births, any uterine surgery and the health of the pregnant person and baby.

If the cervix is not ready to open, cervical-ripening medicine or a balloon device may be offered. Once suitable, the waters may be broken through the vagina. An oxytocin infusion can then encourage contractions, with the dose adjusted according to the contraction pattern and monitoring.

Induction may take time because cervical ripening and established labour are separate stages. Examinations and fetal heart monitoring help the team decide whether to wait, adjust the method or discuss another route of birth.

Before agreeing, ask why induction is being recommended now, what may happen if you wait, which method is proposed and which monitoring is expected. Tell the team about previous caesarean birth, uterine surgery, allergies, medicines and preferences for examinations or pain relief.

Bring the items advised by your maternity unit and clarify whether eating, drinking or taking regular medicines should change before arrival. During the process, report pain between contractions, bleeding, fluid loss, reduced fetal movement or any sudden concern.

Before admission, contact maternity care urgently for reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, suspected waters breaking, severe headache, visual disturbance, severe upper abdominal pain, regular painful contractions or feeling acutely unwell.

While induction is under way, use the call bell or alert staff immediately for heavy bleeding, constant severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, faintness or a strong urge to push. The team can assess both parent and baby without delay.

Discuss the clinical reason, alternatives, likely sequence, pain-relief options and circumstances in which the plan might change. Ask how you and the baby will be monitored and whether mobility, bathing or a birth companion can be accommodated.
