Artificial hair implants: what to consider

It differs fundamentally from a hair transplant, which moves living follicles from a donor area. Synthetic fibres cannot be cut with the expectation that they will regrow, and lost fibres may require replacement procedures.

Each fibre is anchored through the skin rather than supplied by a follicle. The scalp can react with persistent inflammation, infection, scarring, bumps around insertion sites or rejection of fibres. Fibre texture and colour also remain fixed while surrounding natural hair may change.

A proper hair-loss diagnosis still matters. Androgenetic alopecia, female-pattern hair loss and traction alopecia have different patterns and management options. Active inflammatory or scarring scalp disease may make implantation particularly unsuitable until a dermatologist has assessed it.

Have the scalp examined by a dermatologist or qualified hair-restoration clinician before choosing a procedure. Ask whether the fibre is authorised for use where you are being treated, how compatibility is assessed, how instruments are sterilised and how fibres can be removed if a reaction occurs. Disclose allergies, keloid tendency, immune conditions and prior scalp surgery.

If implants are placed, follow the prescribed cleansing and maintenance plan. Avoid pulling, scratching or using dyes and chemical treatments until cleared. Keep scheduled scalp checks even when the appearance is satisfactory, because irritation can begin around individual insertion points.

Seek prompt medical assessment for increasing tenderness, warmth, spreading redness, pus, crusting with an odour, open sores, fever, rapidly increasing fibre loss or new scarring. Emergency care is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness or a rapidly developing widespread allergic reaction.

Request the fibre's product name and material, the practitioner's specific training, the planned test procedure, expected upkeep and a written plan for infection, inflammation or removal. Compare these points with living-follicle transplantation, scalp micropigmentation and non-surgical treatment of the underlying hair-loss condition.
